Jonathan Leung is an Associate in the Business Law Group of McCarthy Tétrault’s Toronto office. Called to the bars of Ontario, New York, and Illinois, he earned his Canadian law degree from the University of Windsor, his U.S. law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy, and his LL.M. in International Financial & Commercial Law from King's College London.
Recently, Jonathan co-authored “Anticipating and Responding to Shareholder Activism: An IRO’s Guide” which was featured in IR Leader, a publication of the Canadian Investor Relations Institute (CIRI).
Prior to his legal career, he was an alumnus of the University of Toronto’s pharmacy school and had a professional career as a registered pharmacist that spanned across both community and hospital settings. In law school, he drew on his unique healthcare experiences to successfully assist a former U.S. Vietnam veteran receive veterans benefits from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
At the University of Detroit Mercy, he was also the recipient of multiple book awards for attaining the highest grade in U.S. & Canadian Evidence, Cross Border Sales & Financial Transactions, Michigan Civil Procedure, and Veterans Law Clinic.
Before joining McCarthy Tétrault, Jonathan summered and articled at another prominent Bay Street-headquartered law firm where he acted on deal teams in M&A and capital market transactions.
Jonathan is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, the American Bar Association, the New York City Bar Association, and the Chicago Bar Association. His practice interests include capital markets, finance, private equity, M&A, and corporate governance.
