Powerhouse Litigator, Marina Sampson, Joins McCarthy Tétrault

To help clients successfully navigate complex and challenging class actions and corporate commercial disputes, McCarthy Tétrault welcomes Marina Sampson to the Toronto office as a partner in our Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group.

Marina is a seasoned and respected litigator, working with some of the biggest companies in Canada and across the world to address high-profile legal issues. Recognized as one of the Top 100 Women Litigators in Canada by Benchmark Litigation, her expertise in class actions, injunctive relief, and complex commercial disputes, including arbitrations, makes her a go-to counsel when organizations need a tough and serious courtroom presence and negotiator.

With a broad corporate commercial practice, Marina’s work includes real estate litigation, contamination disputes and product liability. As a trusted advisor to in-house counsel and C-suite executives, she understands her clients’ sectors, and is particularly experienced in infrastructure, energy and technology. Having represented clients such as Amazon, Toronto Hydro and Canadian National Railway, Marina possesses unique experience working with large, high-profile organizations facing public scrutiny and unique business challenges. Her work on Hughes v. Liquor Control Board of Ontario et al. (2020) won Benchmark Canada’s National Impact Case of the Year.

Marina is also a legal sector leader. She previously served as a member of the Canadian board to a major international law firm and served as the Lead of its Toronto litigation and dispute resolution group and Co-Chair of its Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Other leadership roles include being an Executive Member of the Arbitration and Mediation Practice Group at The Advocates’ Society and a Member of the Board of Directors and Executive for the Canadian Working Group on HIV and Rehabilitation.

Marina writes extensively on important court decisions across Canada and she has been quoted multiple times in mainstream Canadian media.

“Class actions continue to pose unique challenges to our clients as the body of law evolves and litigants adapt their strategies and approaches,” said Sunil Kapur, McCarthy Tétrault’s National Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice Group Leader. “Marina is exactly the kind of lawyer large organizations are looking for to guide them through these sorts of mandates: tough, experienced and proactive. Her work in corporate commercial mandates is also stellar, and she’s a proven leader and wonderful mentor. Our team is really excited to work with her.”
